With William Dunn Moseley as its governor, Florida officially became the twenty-seventh state of the U.S. in March of 1845. Then, at the turn of the century, most residents of Florida lived within fifty miles of Georgia's state line. Between 1900 and 2009, the state population grew from 529,000 to 18.3 million, primarily due to the land boom during the 1920s with all of the land prospectors recognizing the potential of the area. The Mel Fisher Maritime Museum is found in Key West, featuring permanent exhibits including the Henrietta Marie ship. This ship features a collection of items salvaged from the ship. It also features a display of a fleet from 1622, the Tierra Firme flota, which consisted of twenty-eight ships including the Nuestra Senora de Atocha. The fleet was carrying emerald and gold from Columbia, Venezuelan pearls and silver from Mexico and Peru. The ships were hit by a hurricane and eventually sunk. This museum honors those shipwrecks, in addition to the St. John Shipwreck.
The seaplanes of Key West allow visitors to travel both in the air and on water. The seaplane can seat up to five passengers. The company also has a regular, standard land-to-land plane that can seat up to three people. Both planes are low flying, maximizing the sightseeing possibilities of such as manatees, rays, dolphins and turtles. There are thirty and fifty minute Island, Reef and Lighthouse Tours. Other tours include Little Palm Island, which includes Hawk's Cay for brunch, lunch, or dinner and a trip to Cheeca Lodge and the Seaplane Island brunch or lunch trip. The regular plane only includes the first two tours and a Marathon lunch trip.
Tampa's Florida Aquarium features four main display areas: Coral Reef, Bays and Beaches, Ocean Commotion and Wetlands. The Wetlands portion features river otters, birds and alligators. The Bays and Beaches section houses stingrays, sharks and oysters. The Coral Reef features the spotted moray eel, blue tang, angelfish, blacktip shark, grunts and more. The Ocean Commotion features jellyfish, an octopus and clown fish. The aquarium also features activities such as Swim With the Fishes, Dive with the Sharks and the Penguin Promenade.
For December guests of luxury hotels Florida hosts the WinterFest in Fort Lauderdale. It features a boat parade with an after party held on the beach. Other events include the WinterFest Fantasy Boat Student Art Competition, for which kids in third, fourth and fifth grade compete to have their artwork featured in the AT&T Yellow Pages. There is also the WinterFest Golf and Tennis Classic and a family day featuring pictures with Santa Claus, arts and crafts, food samples, a bounce house and other family oriented entertainment plus the Black Tie Ball.
The Jacksonville Jazz Festival is held in May and has featured Herbie Hancock, Mavis Staples, Eddie Palmieri and Natalie Cole. The festival is free and is held at various venues, including The Jacksonville Landing, Hemming Plaza, Main Street, Laura Street and Snyder Memorial. Events include the Generation Next Youth Talent Competition, the 'Round Midnight' Jazz Jam, the Jazz Piano Competition, a Jazz Jamboree and more. The Wine Down Brew Town Tasting Experience coincides with this festival and VIP packages are available.
In October, Daytona Beach hosts the Biketoberfest. It is a family oriented event featuring rides, street fairs, lectures, concerts and exhibits. It also features appearances from celebrities and of course, motorcycle shows including new models, custom designed bikes and vintage bikes, plus demonstrations at the Daytona International Speedway.
